ZIMBABWEAN trade unionists demanded yesterday that the government holds serious talks with striking doctors.
THE Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) said it was “greatly disturbed” by the government’s inaction and that the walkout had “paralysed operations at state-run hospitals.”
Doctors have been on strike for two weeks in protest against the poor conditions of the health service. They are asking for hospitals to have enough drugs and equipment and an increase to their on-call allowance.
“What is more worrying is that for the past 15 years or so, doctors have been striking almost every year without their issues being addressed,” the ZCTU said.
“The strikes have become an annual event and the government has been failing to find a lasting solution.”
The ZCTU noted “with concern that patients are being turned away from government hospitals as the few doctors who have remained at work are failing to cope.”
The “government should, as a matter of urgency, address the needs of striking doctors in order to avoid further loss of life.”
