SYRIAN rebels began abandoning their last stronghold in the western city of Homs yesterday, as part of a deal with the government.

Hundreds of militants boarded buses north to Hama and Idlib provinces under the supervision of Syrian troops and UN observers.

The deal will see several thousand of gunmen and a few hundred remaining residents leave the Waer district of Homs, once dubbed the capital of the rebellion.
