- When Congress stood in silence to mark the death of departed comrades at the start of the week, delegates seemed confused that tribute was not paid to the late RMT leader Bob Crow. It was soon clarified that he’d be remembered separately and on Tuesday he was. But rather than silence, delegates were asked for “maximum noise.” Now, that’s the spirit!
- Our friend outgoing president Taj had to plug the gaps yesterday after delays following the first card vote of the week. As impatient delegates awaited the result, he announced: “I’m not going to dance.” Cue widespread chuckles. He explained: “My wife says that if I dance, I know there’s danger.”
- After Labour’s national policy forum came up with a compromise, shadow transport ministers hoped they’d staved off further disquiet from rail unions over public ownership. But it ain’t necessarily so. TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes told a packed fringe meeting on Tuesday night that his union has “every intention” of putting down a contemporary motion to the conference calling for an end to franchising. Party chiefs just want a “review” of the issue. “Why would you have a review of something you know is a failure?” asks Cortes. Why indeed?
