Chris Williamson: press must do better on Venezuela

LABOUR MP Chris Williamson challenged Channel 4’s Michael Crick and The Observer’s Nick Cohen to “report both sides” at a packed fringe meeting on Latin America on Tuesday night.

On Venezuela, Mr Williamson slammed the one-sided media narrative of a government clampdown on right-wing protesters, pointing to the extreme violence of some of the anti-government activists including burning a young Chavista to death, launching grenade attacks on the Supreme Court and an armed paramilitary assault on an army barracks.

“All I’m asking for is a bit of balanced reportage,” he roared, telling the two men — both of whom were in the audience — to speak to Morning Star journalists, who were also present, if they wanted to learn how to cover the events in the country more objectively.

He also wondered why the media claims about refugees fleeing Venezuela do not mention the five million Colombian refugees who have sought a safe haven in the country.
