A TEAM of volunteers turned out on Saturday to continue restoration work at the legendary trades club in Yorkshire that was severely damaged by floods, writes Peter Lazenby.
The ground floor of the Hebden Bridge club was wrecked by the Boxing Day floods of 2015.
Unite Community has combined with the Labour Party to organise voluntary teams to carry out restoration work. On Saturday they tore down the ground floor’s wrecked ceiling.
Unite Community northern organiser John Coan said: “It’s a united effort to restore the trades and return the whole building to community use.”
And Calder branch Labour Party secretary Hazel Draper said: “The Unite Community volunteers have done brilliant work.”
The building is owned by two local Labour Party branches. The upper floor is occupied by the independent socialist trades social club, a renowned music and political venue, which hosts regular Morning Star fundraising events.
The club was built in 1924 by the textile and tailoring unions of the Calder Valley.

The Morning Star is unique, as a lone socialist voice in a sea of corporate media. We offer a platform for those who would otherwise never be listened to, coverage of stories that would otherwise be buried.
The rich don’t like us, and they don’t advertise with us, so we rely on you, our readers and friends. With a regular donation to our monthly Fighting Fund, we can continue to thumb our noses at the fat cats and tell truth to power.
