Middle East Refugees drown off Yemen while air strikes and street fighting continue

AT LEAST 30 African migrants and refugees drowned when their boat capsized off Yemen earlier this week, the United Nations said today.

The overcrowded boat was carrying 152 Somalis and Ethiopians from the Yemeni coast near Aden towards Djibouti.

The International Organisation of Migration said “unscrupulous smugglers” were trying to “extort more money” from the passengers. Survivors reported gunfire as the boat capsized.

The civil war and brutal Saudi-led assault continued to rage today, with 48 people killed in fighting in the south-western city of Taiz.

Forces loyal to Saudi-backed President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi had tried to retake the city from Houthi rebels.

Witnesses said the Saudi coalition bombing Yemen, with the support, arms and military guidance of Britain and the United States, had struck several Houthi-controlled bases.

Foreign air strikes on Saada province this week killed between 20 and 40 people. At least nine civilians were killed, four of them children.
