DONALD TRUMP declared today that “trade wars are good, and easy to win” after other countries expressed concern at his imposition of tariffs on imported steel and aluminium.
The US president further tweeted: “IF YOU DON’T HAVE STEEL, YOU DON’T HAVE A COUNTRY!”
Mr Trump had earlier said that he plans to impose a 25 per cent tax on imported steel and 10 per cent on aluminium from next week.
The United Steelworkers (USW) union said that the US steel and aluminium industries had long “been under attack by predatory trade practices” and welcomed the enforcement of US trade law.
“For the USW, the objective has always been to restore market-based economics,” said the union’s president Leo Gerard.
He said that the tariffs would “reduce the negative impact” of imports “that have decimated production in the United States.”
Mr Gerard said US citizens “expect national security, the foundation of which is built with steel and [aluminium], to be protected.”
China has expressed “grave concern” at the tariffs and the European Union said it was considering imposing taxes on US exports.
