FORMER MINERS arrested during the 1984-85 strike against pit closures are being urged to submit freedom of information requests to discover what information the police hold on them.

The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign (OTJC) has appealed for more colliery workers to come forward with details of their arrests and treatment by the police during the strike.

Although the campaign focuses on events at the Orgreave coking plant in Yorkshire on June 18 1984, when police mounted a brutal attack on strikers, the campaigners are also aware that police violence was widespread in mining communities nationwide.

In its new appeal, the OTJC says: “We want to know more about arrests at Orgreave and throughout Britain during the strike and, if you were one of the many who were arrested, there is a way you can try to find out what information the police hold about your arrest.”
