FORMER world champion Amir Khan continued his comeback at the Birmingham Arena on Saturday, with a suspenseful unanimous decision win over Colombian Sam Vargas. 

Things started well for the Bolton man, whose blistering hand speed and combination punching dropped Vargas at the beginning of the second round.

Unfortunately for Khan, he lived up to his fragile reputation and was dropped heavily by a perfect overhand right at the end of the second, being luckily saved by the bell. 

Khan came back successfully in the third to stamp his authority and dropped Vargas again with a clipping shot.

For much of the rest of the fight, Khan kept his focus and boxed well, busting the nose of a very brave Vargas.

Despite some momentary success from Vargas, Khan won 119-109, 118-110 and 119-108 setting up a huge potential clash against British welterweight rival Kell Brook.

Also on the card, local middleweights Jason Welborn and Tommy Langford met for a rematch with Welborn winning again by split decision.

Welborn had early success as Langford hit the deck in the first and third from well-timed right hands. Both men had successes and fought a brutal war until the final bell, where Welborn retained the coveted Lonsdale belt.

Earlier in the night, lightning struck as the highly respected Sam Eggington was stopped in the second by major underdog Hassan Mwakinyo from Tanzania.

Hassan threw non-stop punches until the ref was forced to stop Eggington on his feet. 

Stateside, Shawn Porter won the vacant WBC world welterweight title from Danny Garcia with a unanimous points decision.

Porter’s marauding, come-forward style impressed the judges ringside. Garcia struggled to find his feet with the crafty Porter using feints and his mauling style to frustrate the Philly fighter.

This win is due to set Porter up for a monster clash against IBF Champ Errol Spence Jr.
