BRAZIL’S barred presidential front-runner vowed to fight until the end for “the right of our country to dream again” in a message read out to TUC delegates yesterday.
Former president Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva, who was jailed on corruption charges widely held to be false, has been disqualified from running in this year’s presidential election.
In his memo he blasted the “parliamentary coup” that ousted his successor Dilma Rousseff, accusing the current government of wanting to create a “democracy without people.”
Lula said he had been “following the numerous mobilisations and declarations of solidarity organised by the international trade union movement” and thanked activists “immensely … for believing in my innocence and fighting for the re-establishment of democracy in Brazil.”
Offering “a fraternal hug” to delegates, he congratulated the TUC on its 150th anniversary and paid tribute to those “who fight for the rights of the working class and for a fairer world.”
And he said that his Workers Party (PT) was still “experienced and prepared to lead Brazil.”
