AN ANTI-RACISM demonstration to take on the threat of the far right in Britain is winning increasing support from trade unions and politicians.
The TUC Congress passed an emergency motion today to back the November 17 demo, while Labour’s Diane Abbott and John McDonnell, alongside union reps and artists such as Lowkey, have signed a unity statement.
Initiated by Stand Up To Racism and Unite Against Fascism, the statement aims to “regenerate a broad-based mass resistance to division and hate” in light of the increasing far-right street movement.
UCU’s Dave Muritu, who moved the motion, said: “The demonstration will send a message to all those young people being drawn in by the far right that it is not acceptable to blame migrants for their problems, and send a message to politicians that it is not acceptable to use dog-whistle racist policies.”
Stand Up To Racism’s Sabby Dhalu said the organisation was delighted by the support, adding that the labour movement’s support is crucial in the fight against fascism.
