Britain's anti-austerity movement the People's Assembly yesterday urged the public to prepare for a massive fightback in the new year aimed at shaking the Tory-led government's grip on power.
Direct action, country-wide protests and a 1,100-strong recall assembly on March 15 are all part of a sweeping action plan unveiled by the broad-based coalition.
National secretary Sam Fairbairn told the Morning Star that over 80 local groups have sprung up since June 22, when a 4,000-strong founding event was held in the heart of Whitehall.
He described the People's Assembly's 2013 as an "incredible year" which included the summer launch, helping to mobilise thousands alongside trade unions for the historic demonstration at the Conservative Party conference in Manchester, and a nationwide day of civil disobedience and direct action on November 5.
"We are now in a position to call a whole series of actions in the coming months including a national demonstration ending in a free festival in central London on June 21," he revealed.
"And on Budget Day, March 19, we'll be organising protests and demonstrations in towns and cities the length and breadth of the country, demanding 'Britain needs a pay rise.'"
Other plans include:
- A national speaking tour in January and February under the banner "Hands off our unions - defend the right to resist"
- Direct action in January and February as councils set their budgets
- A student week of action from February 3-7
- A Women's Assembly on February 22
The recall assembly will see the many strands of the coalition - whose supporters include campaigns on pensions and the NHS, local anti-cuts campaigns, pro-welfare activists, diverse political groups and a long list of trade unions, agreeing strategy and its political demands.
Mr Fairbairn urged people to "get involved with your local People's Assembly group and help us create a movement that fights for an alternative unheard in the mainstream media or Parliament.
"We need to mobilise millions and build a movement impossible to ignore."
