Construction union Ucatt said yesterday that it would take its campaign against the Qatar government’s treatment of migrant workers directly to the country’s embassy. 

Ucatt has called a protest outside the London embassy on Monday to coincide with International Workers Memorial Day.

As part of the protest union members will unveil a banner reading “Qatar: World Champions at Killing Workers.”

The plight of workers in the Middle Eastern state has grown increasingly high-profile since Qatar was awarded the 2022 World Cup finals.

In the last two years 500 Indian workers have died there. Last year 195 Nepalese deaths were reported, 123 of which were recorded as due to cardiac arrest.

Ucatt general secretary Steve Murphy said: “Hundreds of construction workers are dying in Qatar every year and nothing is being done to stop this carnage.”

The protest will take place at 8.30am Monday 28 April at the Qatari Embassy, 1 Audley Street, London, W1K 1NB.
