Hodgson set to unleash hungry young Lions

Manager set to experiment with nothing to lose

Roy Hodgson will rotate the line-up for tonight’s dead-rubber match against Costa Rica.

With England losing their opening two games and being knocked out at the group stages, tonight’s clash will be used to give some of the younger players a chance to impress with an eye on qualification for the 2016 European Championships in France.

Frank Lampard will captain the squad in what could be his last appearance in the white of England. While Luke Shaw is all but likely to come in for the injured Leighton Baines.

“The hamstring injury to Leighton Baines has ruled him out,” Hodgson said.

“I’m going to be picking the team for Costa Rica with a view that all the players who are with us get some minutes on the field.

“I will be changing the team to give others a chance to show what they can do.

“It’s not purely planning for the future and not purely sentiment. It’s to give players a chance to go home from this World Cup too early, bitterly disappointed but to be able to say they weren’t here to make up the numbers, they actually took part.”

One player that will not feature is Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain who has picked up a recurrance of the knee injury he suffered in the friendly match against Ecuador before the start of the World Cup.

“It was a blow,” added Hodgson. “We’ve been fortunate to go through the tournament and the preparation with so few injuries.

“He had a slight recurrence of the knee problem and will now be out.”

The England manager is also likely to give starts to Manchester United duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling who are yet to feature in the tournament.

Joe Hart may be rested with Ben Foster coming in to replace the Manchester City number one.

There are also likely to be starts for Ross Barkley who has been used as a subsitute in both group games along with Adam Lallana.

Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Wayne Rooney are all likely to keep their place in tonight’s starting 11.

With so many changes, many fear England could head back home losing all three games which could increase calls for Hodgson to step down ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

But with nothing to play for except pride, the younger stars of the nation may spring a few surprises and strengthen their place in Hodgson’s future plans.
