Sao Paulo strike closes half of bus stations

SAO PAULO bus drivers went on strike on Tuesday, closing over half its bus stations and abandoning some vehicles in the middle of the street.

Local transport officials said that 230,000 passengers in the bustling city had been affected by early afternoon and more during the evening rush hour. Fifteen of the city’s 18 bus stations were closed down.

The striking drivers are refusing to accept the results of negotiations between their union and management, which agreed a 10 per cent pay increase.

“This was news to me, these holdouts who don’t accept the terms of the deal,” said surprised Mayor Fernando Haddad.

About 300 striking bus drivers and conductors marched to the mayor’s office to demand a meeting with Mr Haddad.

Other drivers stopped their buses in the middle of the street and told passengers to get off.
