Environmentalists collect Goldman Prize winnings

Six environmentalists each collected $175,000 (£104,000) today at the San Francisco Opera House for winning this year’s Goldman Prize, awarded for grass-roots activism.

India’s Ramesh Agrawal received the prize for helping villagers fight a coal mine in Chhattisgarh state.

Peru’s Ruth Buendia was recognised for helping to prevent construction of two dams that would have displaced 10,000 indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon.

Zoologist Suren Gazaryan won for defending protected areas around Sochi from illegal land seizures for Russian Olympic projects.

US lawyer Helen Slottje received the award for helping communities fight fracking in New York State by using a legal loophole that allowed towns to ban fracking under zoning laws. 

South Africa’s Desmond D’Sa won for helping to close one of the country’s largest toxic waste dumps.

And Indonesian biologist Rudi Putra helped to shut 26 illegal palm oil plantations that were causing deforestation in Sumatra.
