Thousands demand BBC give fair politics coverage

A PETITION demanding the BBC end its “media blackout” of the Green Party amassed more than 8,000 signatures over the weekend.

BBC news coverage of both the European and local elections has been “unfairly biased” against the Greens, the petition posted on the 38 Degrees website on Saturday claims.

It argues that Ukip should enjoy coverage proportional to the party’s achievements, which are currently less than those of the Greens.

Young Greens spokesman Josiah Mortimer told the Star: “For a publicly funded broadcaster with a remit for impartiality to ignore the Green Party to such an extent during the election period is shocking and disappointing.

“On top of the thousands who have signed our petition, dozens have complained directly to the corporation and are awaiting a response.”

It echoes the Morning Star’s own campaign for coverage on the BBC, with 89 MPs signing an EDM calling on the broadcaster’s director general to ensure that the newspaper is featured regularly in its newspaper reviews in the interests of fair and balanced reporting.
