Mexican feminists demand justice after murder of women's rights activist

ACTIVISTS in Mexico are demanding justice and an end to femicide, a week after the assassination of women’s rights activist Isabel Cabanillas de la Torre.

Ms Cabanillas disappeared a week ago, having left a bar to cycle to her home in the northern border city of Juarez. Her body was found later that day with bullet wounds to her chest.

She was a clothing designer, painter and active member of the feminist Daughters of Maquila Worker Mothers collective.

Her murder has prompted large demonstrations in her home city, with family and friends criticising the large police presence at a protest rally. Protesters demanded to know why the authorities were not present at the time of her death.

Activists have called on the international community to stand in solidarity with those fighting for justice in Mexico.

They demanded an end to the disappearances and femicides in Juarez — which have increased since it became a centre of cheap manufacturing for companies under the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement.
