Masked gunmen seize 18 Turkish builders in Sadr City, Iraq

MASKED men in military uniforms kidnapped 18 Turkish employees of an Ankara-based construction company in Baghdad early yesterday.

The 18 were employed by Nurol Insaat, a Turkish construction company contracted to build a sports complex in Sadr City.

The kidnappers stormed the construction site, where the workers were sleeping in caravans, breaking down doors and disarming the guards before taking the workers away. One Iraqi was also abducted.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic said the kidnappers specifically targeted Turkish nationals, picking them out from the rest and leaving behind workers from other countries.

The kidnappers was not immediately known, but Turkey has in recent weeks launched a bombing campaign against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party in northern Iraq and Islamic State in Syria.

Sadr City is the stronghold of the Sadrist movement and Mahdi Army militia, and was recently targeted by suspected Isis bombers.
