Intervene in steel industry or face community destruction and mass joblessness, PM told

TATA Steel’s jobs massacre will wreck communities and destabilise Britain’s economy unless the government steps in, steel union GMB warned yesterday.

The Indian-owned transnational intends to make 250 redundancies in its strip steel business — on top of 720 it announced last month.

Llanwern’s hot mill, cold mill and one of its pickle lines will be closed and mothballed under the plans.

“This is more bad news for the steel industry,” said GMB national officer Dave Hulse.

“There are well-founded concerns over the future of the steel industry.”

GMB has proposed that steel unions demand a meeting with Prime Minister David Cameron to thrash out safeguards on the future of British production.

“We will see local communities destroyed with mass unemployment while the balance of payments deficit will increase if we don’t act now,” Mr Hulse said.
