SNP First Minister Alex Salmond: Momentum is with 'positive, uplifting' Yes Scotland campaign

Scottish nationalist leader tells SNP conference delegates the Yes Scotland independence campaign points the way to the country becoming a 'beacon of hope'

Alex Salmond told his supporters yesterday that the Yes campaign has the “momentum” in the run-up to September’s independence referendum.

The First Minister said it was “Scotland’s moment to be a beacon of hope.”

He told SNP conference in Aberdeen that the Yes campaign had made a “positive, uplifting, hopeful” case for independence.

“Make no mistake — momentum is with this campaign. The people are coming towards us,” he said.

But the No campaign warned that the SNP should focus its efforts on devolution if the Scottish people rejected independence.

A YouGov survey for Better Together reported that 59 per cent of Scots believed that the SNP should “consider the matter settled” if Scotland votes No.

Speaking for Better Together, Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie said: “The idea of a ‘neverendum’ doesn’t appeal to Scots. People are clear that they don’t want a referendum every few years.”
