SNP ‘has more members than Lib Dems’ after indy vote

THE SNP has become the third-largest party in Britain in the wake of the independence referendum, it said yesterday.

More than 26,000 people have joined since last Thursday’s historic vote, pushing the Scottish nationalists ahead of the Liberal Democrats in the membership stakes.

The Lib Dems claimed to have 44,000 members in April, well shy of the SNP’s 52,034 tally as of 4pm yesterday.

SNP business convener Derek Mackay said the figures were “absolutely inspiring.”

The membership rise shows that it is “the SNP the people of Scotland trust to work in the best interests of Scotland,” he claimed.

“We are now the third-largest party in the UK — overtaking the Lib Dems, who are clearly suffering from the effects of going into coalition with the Tories.”
