Andre Tate exhibition sparks angry protests

PROTESTERS clashed with security at the Tate Modern on Monday evening as the museum opened an exhibition by controversial US artist Carl Andre.

The Where Is Ana Mendieta? campaign disputes Mr Andre’s innocence in the death of his artist wife Ms Mendieta, who fell from their 34th-floor New York flat in 1985.

Works by both artists are owned by the Tate Modern, but the curators’ choice not to display her pieces in the exhibition angered her supporters.

After marching over London’s Millennium Bridge, protesters stormed the museum, blocking visitors from entering.

They shouted slogans including: “Oi Tate we’ve got a vendetta, where the fuck is Ana Mendieta?”

On hearing rumours that Mr Andre himself was inside the building, the protesters — most of whom were women — chanted: “Andre, Andrew what you gonna do, what you gonna do when we come for you?”

Tate Modern did not comment on the incident.
