Iran: British embassy reopened in Tehran

BRITAIN’S Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond reopened the British embassy in Tehran yesterday after almost four years.

London withdrew its diplomatic presence from Iran in 2011 after the embassy came under attack from demonstrators protesting against sanctions imposed on the country for its alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons.

“Our relationship has improved since 2011,” Mr Hammond said, citing “President [Hassan] Rouhani’s election and last month’s nuclear agreement” as “important milestones.”

The Tory minister said the two countries should be prepared to work together tackling “terrorism, regional stability and the spread of the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq.”

The embassy opening showed that “the world has realised Iran’s constructive role in the region and the globe,” according to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Iran simultaneously reopened its embassy in London.
