THE European Union took the first step towards sanctioning Poland yesterday over the government’s stand-off with the Constitutional Court.
The European Commission sent a “highly critical opinion” to Warsaw regarding its changes to the power of the court, which it says undermine the rule of law in the country.
Commissioner Frans Timmermans said he hoped the move would “focus our dialogue with the government of Poland on issues that we believe need to be solved to get out of the conflict.”
