Somalia: Al-Shabab ‘kill scores’ of Kenyan troops

SOMALIAN al-Shabab insurgents attacked Kenyan troops in the country yesterday — with both sides claiming they killed scores of the other.

Al-Shabab spokesman Sheikh Abdiaziz Abu-Musab said the Islamist militants killed 51 of the African Union peacekeepers and seized military vehicles during the early morning attack in their base in Kulbiyow in Lower Jubba region.

But Kenyan military spokesman PM Njuguna said in a statement that the “rumours” being spread by al-Shabab were false.

He said the troops “fiercely engaged” the al-Shabab gunmen as they tried to storm the camp.

Somali Colonel Ahmed Ali said a massive suicide car bomb allowed dozens of extremists to overrun the Kenyan camp, torching tents and arms depots.

Col Ali disputed al-Shabab’s claim of killing at least 51 soldiers, saying the Kenyans fought back before retreating to a nearby area.

Two Kenyan police officers were killed and four seriously wounded when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while they were crossing into Somalia to respond to Friday’s attack.
