WEST Bromwich Albion manager Tony Pulis has emphasised the need to add “more quality” to his squad in the January transfer window.
Pulis, who spoke after his side’s 2-1 win over champions Leicester City at Filbert Way on Sunday evening, admitted that he needs to freshen up an ageing Baggies side.
“We need a little bit more quality like [Nacer] Chadli,” he said. “I’ve spoken to the Chinese owners and thats what we’ll try and do.
“We need to get more quality players in rather than four or five players and try and build it from there.
“The spirit and togetherness is there but we’re an older team and we need younger players with more quality to come into the group and help.”
And after a dull first half it was one of West Brom’s more senior players who opened the scoring when James Morrison got on the end of a Matt Phillips right-wing cross to head his side into the lead.
But it took just 181 seconds for the home side to draw level when record signing Islam Slimani nodded home his fourth goal of the season.
Then with 18 minutes left to play the outstanding Phillips capitalised on a bad pass from Danny Drinkwater before slotting the ball coolly past Ron-Robert Zieler, who was deputising in goal for the injured Kasper Schmeichel.
After the game Pulis confirmed that he had spoken to Phillips, who had been recalled to the Baggies starting XI after being dropped for the game against Manchester City last weekend.
“The biggest problem with Matt is that self-belief at times,” said the Welshman.
“He’s got all the tools, he’s very quick, he’s got two great feet and he’s got a good goalscoring record.
“But we had chat with him last week and told him he has to start understanding that he’s a good player and he deserves to be where he is.”
“That’s all we can do, is give him that confidence.”
For Leicester, defeat ended a 20-game unbeaten home league run dating back to September 2015.
“I am very sorry we lost our unbeaten record at home,” said Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri.
“We knew it would be a tough match against West Brom.
“The first half was not good. We try to have a plan but it was difficult to do this, the second half was much better but we lost the match.”
