Boss Alvin and his sole employee Lance are spending a solitary summer repainting traffic lines down the centre of a country highway ravaged by wildfire.

Though polar opposites in character the two have a connection - Alvin's wife happens to be Lance's sister.

In their work they meet only an old truck driver and a woman who has lost her home in the fire.

When Alvin's wife dumps him by letter, his relationship with Lance nosedives but soon transforms into the sweetest thing.

Director David Gordon Green blends social satire with a clear-eyed sense of the ways people perceive themselves in what is a slow-paced road film.

It has an arresting look and it is certainly a refreshing walk in the wild as its characters, discovery of themselves takes machismo to the end of the line.
