LIBRARY campaigners cautiously welcomed yesterday parliamentarians’ decision to reform a group devoted to libraries.
The all-party parliamentary group announced that it will work with the library and information association Cilip to discuss and promote the role of libraries, with Labour MP Gill Furniss in the chair.
Leading library campaigner Shirley Burnham said: “As long as it’s not just a talking shop, it may well be the last hope for those millions who rely on public libraries. “Gill Furniss MP is a splendid choice to chair it.”
Several library workers in London told the Star that they would prefer money to be spent on advertising libraries on television rather than “more government reports.”
Ms Furniss, who previously trained as a librarian, told the Bookseller: “I don’t mind falling out with the [libraries] minister if there’s a cause to be fought for.”
Cilip chief executive Nick Poole said, “We will support the all-party parliamentary group for Libraries to make the case why we should invest in knowledge in communities, schools and across the NHS.”
