Lambeth activists bring people together to discuss local housing issues

by Marc Livingstone

Over 100 people attended "Another Lambeth is Possible" on Saturday, a conference organised by Lambeth Housing Activists.

The event brought together local activists, tenants and small business owners, as well as politicians, to discuss the themes of gentrification and social cleansing.

There was a positive, vibrant atmosphere following the recent victory of the campaign against the demolition of the Cressingham Gardens estate, after the High Court ruled that Lambeth Council's Consultation had been unlawful and must be re-run.

Local activist Marian Okanlawon spoke movingly of her successful struggle against eviction by Guinness Housing Association.

Labour politicians Helen Hayes MP and Councillor Matthew Bennett were given a grilling, with one contributor accusing the Council of “siding with the property developers”, and calling on them to “make a political fight for social homes”.

A steering committee was formed to take things forward, with plans for a demonstration in the New Year.
