Brazil: Cops collar missing oil tycoon at Rio airport

BRAZILIAN police arrested oil and mining tycoon Eike Batista, one of the country’s richest men, on Monday after he flew back from New York.

Mr Batista was collared at Rio de Janeiro airport four days after authorities found him missing from his Brazilian home.

The prosecutor’s office said in a statement that US police had been monitoring Mr Batista over the weekend until the moment the plane door closed and they confirmed he was on board.

The businessman insisted he had never intended to flee the country and was only in the United States on business.

Mr Batista, who is famous for having amassed and then lost a multibillion-dollar fortune, is accused of paying £13 million in bribes to former Rio de Janeiro state governor Sergio Cabral in return for lucrative government contracts.

Mr Cabral is under investigation for hiding and laundering nearly £64m in foreign bank accounts.
