Ofsted head Sir Michael Wilshaw faced criticism by teaching unions yesterday after he warned that schools allowing pupils and staff to wear face veils could be ruled “inadequate” if they are deemed to hinder learning.
National Union of Teachers deputy general secretary Kevin Courtney argued: “Rather than assisting school leaders, this will have the effect of alienating many staff and pupils.”
And Nasuwt general secretary Chris Keates asked: “Where is the evidence that demonstrates that wearing the veil is a barrier to teaching and learning?”
