Libya: EU decides to boost role of navy in the Med
EUROPEAN Union foreign ministers agreed yesterday to boost the role of naval operations in the Mediterranean.
They packaged their decision as compassion for desperate refugees leaving Libya in unseaworthy boats along with policies to build up its coastguard and navy and to help police a UN arms embargo off the Libyan coast.
The ministers confirmed the extension of Operation Sophia until July 2017.
