France: Fascists had ‘no choice but’ to expel Le Pen

FRENCH National Front (FN) vice-president Florian Philippot said yesterday that the fascist party had no choice but to expel its founder Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Speaking the day after the decision to expel the aged anti-semite, Mr Philippot said Mr Le Pen went “from provocation to provocation.”

But Mr Le Pen said the decision by six members of the eight-member executive bureau was carried out by an “execution squad” on orders of his daughter, party president Marine Le Pen.

He faced 15 complaints relating to public statements including those in which he downplayed nazi gas chambers as a “detail in the history” of World War II.

The former leader claimed his remarks fell within the domain of freedom of speech.

Ms Le Pen has been trying to sanitise her party’s image in hopes of winning the 2017 French presidential election.
