EMBITTERED Cuban-Americans who still dream of Cuba reverting to the corruption, repression and effective US control that Fidel Castro overthrew celebrated the news of his death in the streets of Miami at the weekend.
They banged pots with spoons, honked car horns, waved Cuban and US flags and whooped in jubilation on Calle Ocho, in the centre of Miami’s Little Havana district.
Eighty-year-old Rafael Torre wore his Bay of Pigs veteran shirt and marvelled that Mr Castro had remained in power for so long.
“We tried for more than 50 years but couldn’t do it,” he acknowledged regretfully.
“Now he’s dead and maybe things can change. It might take three or four years. Maybe the revolution will be on the streets in three or four months.”
Some younger Cuban-Americans have visited relatives in Cuba in recent years and supported efforts to improve bilateral relations.
