Ukraine: Rebel forces accused of killing captured soldiers

CAPTURED Ukrainian troops have been executed by rebel fighters in the country’s east, Amnesty International claimed yesterday.

The human rights group said it had seen footage of soldiers loyal to the fascist-backed government in Kiev who had been captured, interrogated and then found shot in apparent executions.

Igor Branovytsky, taken away after resistance fighters regained Donetsk airport, appeared in an interrogation video on YouTube.

Several people claim to have seen a rebel commander shoot him point-blank. His body was returned to his family and buried on April 3.

Amnesty said it had evidence of the execution of at least three others captured in Debaltseve in February, whose bodies are in the Donestk mortuary.

“The mounting evidence of abuses of captives by both sides highlights the urgent need for an independent investigation into this and all other allegations of abuses in this conflict,” said Amnesty Europe and Central Asia deputy director Denis Krivosheev.
