Elite Israeli unit faces disciplinary for refusal to serve in occupied territories

The Israeli military threatened disciplinary action against 43 current and reservist members of a secretive military intelligence unit on Sunday.

The members of elite intelligence Unit 8200 had sent an open letter to the Israeli prime minister and heads of the army and intelligence services on Friday saying they “refuse to take part in actions against Palestinians and refuse to continue serving as tools in deepening military control over the Occupied Territories.’’

The whistleblowers said intelligence-gathering “harms innocent people. It is used for political persecution and to create divisions within Palestinian society by recruiting collaborators and driving Palestinian society against itself.”

Army spokesman Moti Almoz warned “disciplinary treatment will be sharp and clear.

“The army is not the place to voice disputes and political positions.”

Palestinians praised the letter. “If there are 43 soldiers who reject the idea of occupation, we view this as a moral act,” said spokesman Adnan Damiri.
