A CONSTRUCTION company has been fined for failing to adequately protect its staff after a worker suffered a permanent eye injury from a flying nail.
The Northampton man was hit as a colleague was attempting to fasten a piece of timber to a steel block in 2013.
Luton magistrates’ court also heard that the nail gun operator was equipped with only flimsy “spectacle” protective eye-wear, rather than goggles that could have absorbed the impact if he had been hit himself.
On Monday, contractor Steele & Bray Limited was fined £6,500 and ordered to pay £898.20 in costs, after the company pleaded guilty to an offence under the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992.
The incident took place only six months after the Health and Safety Executive, which brought the prosecution, published new guidance on the safe use of nail guns.
