Chelsea rout Slovenian champs

Chelsea 6-0 NK Maribor

This rout of the Slovenian champions Maribor left Chelsea on the verge of qualifying for the next stage of the Champions League.

However, the mood on the evening was soured with an injury to striker Loic Remy, which means that manager Jose Mourinho, already without Diego Costa, has a striker problem ahead of this weekend’s trip to Manchester United.

The Spanish striker is unlikely to shake off a persistent hamstring injury ahead of that match and now his replacement has been ruled out too.

“We don’t cry on injuries,” said Mourinho. “It’s our philosophy, we don’t cry. We just think one injury means an opportunity for somebody else. We cannot hide.

“In this moment, we have some problems with players that are not available to play. We will prepare the game Thursday, Friday, Saturday to try to be at our best possible level against an opponent which we respect very, very much.”

Remy, leading the line in the continued absence of top scorer Costa, scored Chelsea’s opening goal on 12 minutes when he cut inside his marker Marko Suler before firing a low curling ball beyond the goalkeeper. He appeared to pull up moments after striking the ball.

Drogba scored his side’s second when he converted a spot-kick after midfielder Ales Mertelj handled the ball in the penalty area. It was the Chelsea legend’s first goal since his return to the club.

By the time that John Terry sprinted the length of the pitch to score Chelsea’s third goal on 31 minutes, the win had been sealed.

Chelsea’s players broke from a corner kick with Hazard, excellent on the evening, collecting the ball before intelligently playing in Cesc Fabregas.

The Spaniard spotted the late run of Terry, who slid in to score for his side.

Chelsea’s fourth came on 54 minutes when Hazard’s attempted cross was diverted into his own net by Mitja Viler.

The visitors had a chance to regain some pride when they were awarded a penalty kick on 64 minutes after Nemaja Matic fouled Agim Ibraimi. The Maribor striker’s effort struck the post.

Hazard added a fifth on 77 minutes from the penalty spot after Branislav Ivanovic was fouled in the penalty area, and the Belgian completed the win in style with a fine finish after running onto a pass from substitute Nathan Ake.

Maribor manager Ante Simundza said: “It was obvious that this was a team that is a serious candidate to win the title in this year’s Champions League.”
