Faithless flock get the message

Peter Lindley loves Faithless at Clapham Common, London/Touring

5/5

TWENTY years on from the end of the free summer rave Faithless return to their roots at the South West Four dance weekend with this knock-out gig.

It’s a blistering set, pumped out via a colossal sound system and accompanied by a breathtaking synchronised laser and light show.

There’s a deep audience connection with Maxi Jazz’s lyrics, underpinned by the complementary sounds Sister Bliss orchestrates.

Heavy guitar work from Perri AP Gwynedd complements the strident dance music mixed in with rave, reggae, dub and punky rhythm and rhyme as Jazz (pictured) wastes no time in calling for people to unify on the track All Races, while God is a DJ makes touching reference to his faith.

Muhammad Ali marks out a funky trail while Jazz’s hatred of war in the immense velocity of Mass Destruction demands utter attention.

Kyla Bowen La Grange joins the band for an angelic performance of Hands, then Jazz returns with What About Love, his solution to social injustice and the malign power of the state.

Insomnia drifts a little in comparison to the studio version but when Sister Bliss triggers its anthemic riff, mayhem erupts.

Salva Mea is the stand-out before encore We Come As 1, which unifies the entire body politic into one celebratory mass dance.
