Toyota recalls 35,000 British cars amid safety fears

MANUFACTURING: Car maker Toyota is recalling more than 35,000 British cars after it discovered serious faults.

The issues could deactivate airbags, cause seats to move while driving and break steering columns.

They affect some RAV4, Hilux, Yaris and Urban Cruiser models, Toyota said.

For far, no accidents have been reported due to theses issues, but the Japanese firm will still recall 35,124 British-registered vehicles.

MUSIC: Cinematic composer Michael Nyman has created a new symphony that names all 96 victims of the Hillsborough disaster in memory of the tragedy.

The work, dubbed Symphony No. 11: Hillsborough Memorial, will be performed in Liverpool’s Church of England cathedral by the city’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Local singers will sing the names when it is performed at the start of Liverpool Biennial 2014, which opens on July 5.

MAY DAY: Fire union FBU general secretary Matt Wrack will be guest speaker at Leeds Trades Union Council’s annual May Day march and rally on Saturday May 3.

Other speakers include RMT ex-president Alex Gordon and Care UK strikers from Doncaster.

Assemble at Leeds Art Gallery at 11.30 am.
