A SHEFFIELD Labour MP called yesterday for northern England to be given the same tax and borrowing powers as New York.
Clive Betts argued that the north-east and Greater Manchester should be among regions to be freed from Whitehall rules and handed financial powers on a par with the Big Apple.
The communities and local government committee he chairs has recommended that business rates, stamp duty and council tax be set locally.
It that proposes groups of local authorities would receive the powers in order to drive the investment that Con-Dem ministers refuse to deliver.
Mr Betts said: “If the citizens of New York, Frankfurt and Tokyo can be trusted with tax-raising powers, why not the people of London, Greater Manchester or the north-east?
“Local areas know best how to stimulate their economies.”
The Sheffield South East MP added that people in England want to benefit from devolved powers they see helping people in Scotland and Wales.
