WORLD-RENOWNED author Ian McEwan lashed out at internet retailers Amazon yesterday for its woeful track record of dodging taxes.
The Booker Prize-winning author demanded that Amazon “pay its taxes like the rest of us.”
And he voiced concern about the retailers “preponderance” in the book market, saying he would like to see “three or four Amazons” to curb the US-based giant’s monopoly on the industry.
Mr McEwan told BBC Radio 4 Today programme: “Giant monopolies are never good for any enterprise and of course I would like it to be paying its taxes like the rest of us.”
The author’s latest novel The Children Act is released this week.
Amazon was revealed to have paid just £4.2 million in corporation tax last year despite records sales of £4.3 billion in Britain.
