Syria: Turkey calls on government to halt Barada valley offensive

TURKEY’S foreign minister accused the Syrian government yesterday of violating the new ceasefire with its offensive against al-Qaida-linked fighters, who have poisoned the water supplies to five million people.

Mevlut Cavusoglu called on Iran to press its ally to halt ongoing operations.

Troops captured parts of Basimah village in the Barada valley, where the Levant Conquest Front contaminated water to Damascus with diesel and then blew up a water treatment works last month.

On Friday Isis cut off the main water supply from the Euphrates river to recently liberated Aleppo, home to two million people.

On Tuesday outgoing CIA director John Brennan accused Russia of a “scorched earth” policy in Syria resulting in thousands of civilian casualties.

Russian Defence Ministry spokesman General Igor Konashenkov hit back yesterday, saying the US-led coalition had been “systematically destroying Syria’s economic infrastructure” long before Russia’s intervention, adding to the refugee crisis.
