Mike Read 'sorry' for Ukip song offence

DJ Mike Read apologised “unreservedly” yesterday for any offence caused by his song praising Ukip, sung in a mock Caribbean accent.

The former Radio 1 star also requested the record company withdraw the Ukip Calypso song just two days after its release.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage promoted the song himself after its release on Monday, urging his followers to help it get to number one and including a link to buy it on Amazon.

Twenty pence of every 79p download from Amazon and iTunes went to the party.

Mr Read even performed Ukip Calypso at the party’s conference in Doncaster last month.

But the track featured controversial lyrics attacking immigration and included the line: “The leaders committed a cardinal sin. Open the borders let them all come in. Illegal immigrants in every town. Stand up and be counted Blair and Brown.”

A Ukip spokesman responded: “It’s a pity those so concerned with political correctness have trodden all over this.”

Ukip pledged to donate a proportion of the proceeds of the song to Red Cross but the charity yesterday refused the offer because it is party political and contains an attack on refugees and asylum-seekers.
