Huge numbers of refugees rescued

LIBYA: Italian coastguard ships and other vessels have rescued 6,500 refugees in a 30-hour period off the coast near the town of Sabratha.

Some refugees leapt from overcrowded people-trafficking boats to swim to the rescue vessels, a mile outside Libyan territorial waters.

Groups such as Proactiva Open Arms and Doctors Without Borders took aboard 3,000 people from some 20 small wooden boats.
