Egypt: Appeal court throws out life sentence for Morsi

OUSTED Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi won another legal victory yesterday when the Court of Cassation quashed a life sentence and ordered his retrial on charges of conspiracy with foreign militant groups.

The decision by the Cairo court was delivered nearly 17 months after the initial sentence against Muslim Brotherhood leader Mr Morsi was passed.

The same court overturned a death sentence against him last week in a separate case linked to a prison escape during the 2011 uprising against Mr Morsi’s predecessor Hosni Mubarak.

The court also threw out life sentences for 16 other jailed Brotherhood members, including the movement’s spiritual leader Mohammed Badei, and overturned death sentences against 16 others, most of whom were tried in absentia.

No date has been set for the retrial.

A court upheld Mr Morsi’s 20-year sentence last month on charges arising from the killing of protesters in December 2012.
