Oman: Ten Guantanamo detainees released

THE government of Oman said yesterday it has accepted 10 newly released detainees of the US’s notorious Guantanamo Bay concentration camp.

The Foreign Ministry said it had accepted the 10, who were not named, in response to a request from US President Barack Obama.

Despite promising when first elected to close the brutal camp — where individuals kidnapped around the world have been held without charge or trial for years on end — Mr Obama has failed to do so, and 55 abductees continue to be held there.

The detainees sent to Oman are thought to be among 19 of the 55 the US said last week had been cleared for release.

Prospects for the final closure of the illegal prison — sited at a US naval base on unlawfully occupied Cuban territory — will recede after Donald Trump ascends to the presidency on Friday, since he has promised to keep the camp open and “load it up with bad dudes.”
