Indonesian police fire tear gas at Jakarta protesters

INDONESIAN police fired tear gas today at protesters outside a Jakarta court ruling on a challenge to last month’s elections.

Witnesses said police fired when demonstrators tried to get past barbed wire blocking a road leading to the court.

The protesters were supporters of Prabowo Subianto, who lost the election by a large margin but refused to accept the result.

Mr Subianto, a former general with links to former dictator Suharto, had alleged fraud in the July 9 polls and filed a complaint at the constitutional court.

The election commission had declared former Jakarta governor Joko Widodo the winner with 53 per cent of the votes, over eight million ahead of Mr Subianto.

However, Mr Subianto leads a coalition controlling a majority of seats in parliament, meaning Mr Widodo may have trouble enforcing his policies.

The court rejected any change to the election result.
