India wipe the floor with poor England

Visitors thrash home side by 133 runs in Cardiff

by Our Sports Desk

INDIA gave England a mauling in the second tie of their one-day international series yesterday, winning by 133 runs in Cardiff.

The first leg was rained off and there were fears that yesterday’s game would end up as a draw as well when the heavens opened after India’s impressive 304 for six innings in the morning.

The rain break led to England chasing a revised target of 295 in 47 overs, but the visitors only need 38.1 to claim all of England’s wickets.

ODI debutante Alex Hales managed to run the furthest for the home side, but his 40 couldn’t make up for a poor batting display elsewhere. Chris Jordan ended up walking back to pavilion on a duck, while Ian Bell, Joe Root and Jos Butler all failed to make it into double figures.

Despite the imposing target, England had looked up for the chase with a solid opening stand of 54 — but after first-change Mohammad Shami struck twice in four balls, England were already in trouble on the way to 64 for three after 15 overs.

Rohit Sharma (52) had helped India recover from a sticky start of their own, after Cook won the toss under cloudy skies — and then Raina (100) took over in a fifth-wicket stand of 144 with Mahendra Singh Dhoni (52).

By the time he holed out in the deep off Chris Woakes, having hit 12 fours and three sixes from 75 balls in his fourth one-day international hundred, early expectations that England might heavily restrict India were shot to bits.

Ravi Jadeja made his mark for the tourists, taking four of England’s wickets, but the home side never looked like seriously challenging.
